Chapter Three

Warning Given

“You went back,” Aurora said.

Pixie lifted her chin defiantly. “Yes.”

Fern whispered, “And it’s not the same now, is it?”

Pixie didn’t answer; the silence said enough.

Hazel crossed her arms, her color unusually flat. “We felt it,” she said, “from the forest.”

Charlie blinked. “You felt what?”

All four sprites turned toward him at once.

“I think we need to talk inside.” He gestured toward the door.

They stepped inside, the sprites perched on Charlie's four chairs while Pixie and Charlie stood.

“Go on,” Pixie said.

Ciela spoke this time, looking at Charlie, her voice quiet but steady. “You’re not just human.”

“I gathered that.”

“No,” she said, gesturing at Pixie. “Not just what you are. You're already changing, and so is she. She's no longer just a selkie.”

That took the humor out of him.

Pixie stepped slightly forward, placing herself between them before she realized it. “Say what you mean plainly.”

Aurora inhaled slowly. “The bond is forming too fast.”

Charlie frowned. “Too fast for what?”

“Too fast to be safe,” Hazel said.

Pixie’s brow furrowed. “Bonds take time, trust, and repetition.”

“Yes,” Fern said. “They do.”

All four of them looked at her.

“That’s why this is wrong.”

Silence fell over the room.

Pixie shook her head slightly. “It’s not wrong. It’s just...different.”

Ciela said, her voice barely above a whisper, “You’re a selkie, but you’re anchored to the land now. That is wrong.”

Pixie froze in place.

Charlie looked between them. “Okay, you’re going to have to explain that one.”

Hazel didn’t take her eyes off Pixie. “Selkies aren’t meant to anchor to land; not like this. They visit, wander, then return to the sea.”

Fern added quietly, “Don’t tie yourself to someone.”

Pixie’s eyes dropped. “I haven’t tied myself.”

Aurora met her gaze. “Then why can we still feel him on you?”

Pixie’s hand lifted, as if she could brush the connection away.

Inside Charlie’s mind, the arachnid ponies stirred, aware.

Pixie felt it.

Charlie felt it too this time, clearer than before.

“They’re reacting,” he said quietly.

All four sprites snapped their attention to him.

“You can feel them now?” Fern asked.

He nodded slowly. “Not like she does. I've always known they were there, but...yeah, this is something more.”

Hazel swore under her breath.

“That’s worse,” she muttered.

Pixie looked between them, something sharper entering her expression. She had never heard any of them swear. “You’re speaking in fear, not truth.”

Aurora’s voice softened as she said, “We’re speaking from the ancient stories.”

That gave Pixie pause. She had heard some of the stories. Doubt entered her mind for a moment.

Ciela spoke up. “There are old tales,” she said, “of bonds between sea and land, between fey and mortals.”

Charlie folded his arms, “I’m guessing they don’t end well.”

“No,” Ciela said.

Fern shook her head. “They burn too fast. Or they bind too tightly. Or…” she hesitated.

“Or?” Pixie pressed.

Hazel said bluntly. “One or both of them stop being what they were, especially if they are fey. You'll lose your magic.”

Pixie didn’t move.

Charlie didn’t speak.

Aurora took a step closer, her voice gentle now. “We’re not saying to leave him. We’re saying,” Aurora continued, “to be careful how deep this goes.”

Pixie swallowed.

Inside, she could still feel the ponies: steady, present, unchanged, and watching.

She lifted her chin. “I trust him.”

Charlie glanced at her, surprised by the certainty in her voice.

Hazel sighed. “That’s exactly how the stories start.”

Then Fern said, “Just don’t lose your way back to the sea.”

Pixie didn’t answer right away.

Instead, she reached out without thinking and took Charlie’s hand.

Inside his mind, the ponies shifted, forming a loose, watchful circle.

Pixie felt it.

He did too.

Aurora saw it and her expression sharpened. “It’s already begun,” she said quietly.

No one argued.

“I will always have my coat. That was a promise made,” Pixie said to her friends.

He nodded. “I will never take away her freedom.”

The ponies dropped their heads, but stayed awake.

“Fine,” Aurora said, her colors brightening slightly. “Suit yourself.”

Celia looked out the window at the sky as if seeking wisdom. “We don't want to have to say, ‘we told you so,’ later.”

“Are you certain this is what you want? You don't know anything about him,” said Hazel, looking at him out of the corner of her eye.

“I'm right here. You can speak to me as well. Yes, we’re sure.”

“I'll go get your coat.” Fern slipped out the door before any of the rest could say more.

Aurora still stood with arms folded. “I still say nothing good can come of this union.”

“You told me yourself he's technically a selkie, that his mother was a sprite, but his father was a selkie.”

A sharp breath drawn in beside her said that this was news to Charlie.

“Go on,” he said, his voice halfway between thoughtful and ominous.

“Your father’s mother was a human mated to a selkie, and your mother’s father was a human who married a sprite,” Aurora explained.

“That explains why I can’t transform into a selkie,” he said flatly.

“Yes. That’s why you are always drawn to the sea but can’t go back. You’re half human.” Her colors flickered uncertainly.

“I like my comforts.” He let out a guffawing laugh, gesturing around the apartment. Looking down at Pixie, he added, “It’s much more comfortable than your cave.”

“None taken.” Pixie straightened herself proudly. “I do like my cave and will never entirely give it up, but I have to agree with you on this. I might even consider joining you here, if you want,” she boldly stated.

“We’ll talk later about that,” he said with a grimace of anxiety crossing his face.

Fern placed the coat gently into Pixie’s hands.

Pixie took it, her fingers tightening slightly around the familiar weight. When did Fern come back? Did she also know what Aurora had just revealed? Sprites were, obviously, even more curious than Pixie, and they seemed to know one's business before one knew it oneself. For a moment, she simply held it: choice, freedom, anchor...all at once.

They were right; she knew nothing about Charlie.

She looked up.

Her friends watched her.

Charlie stood beside her.

And somewhere deeper than either, the ponies remained: awake, waiting, and listening.

They all knew there would be no going back to what had been.

Her friends disappeared out the door in flickers of color with no more words to be said.

Charlie took the coat gently from her hands and hung it in the closet: high enough to be safe, low enough to reach.

“Always yours,” he said quietly.

“I'm staying,” she said defiantly.

“I know.”

“And if I want to leave, I will.”

“Yes.” His gaze held steady. “Your coat will be here. I’m not hiding it from you. You’re free. You will always be free.”

She exhaled a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

“I should go talk to my friends…” Her voice trailed off as he stepped closer.

His hand brushed her arm. His mouth lowered toward hers.

“I need you,” he murmured, “one more time.”

Pixie did not pull away as his hands started their skillful dance on her ears.

New sensations heated up her body.

“I’ll be back.” He headed for the kitchen. She pulled off her dress and waited in anticipation. He returned with two things: what looked like some sort of clip and a small block of ice.

“A clothespin,” he explained and carefully clamped it on her engorged right nipple.

“Ohhhh!” She wailed.

“Scream for me, Pixie.” He placed the ice on the other nipple and rubbed his thumb across the one with the clamp.

Sensations ripped through her body and her hips bucked involuntarily.

He pushed his shorts down and stepped out of them.

“On your knees on the edge of the bed,” he ordered.

He shoved his cock into her tight pussy, pounding her hard.

“Take me, Charlie. I am yours.”

With that, he grabbed her hips and buried himself deeply inside her one last time. Her walls pulsed around him and she screamed his name. It sent him over the edge as well and he squirted deep inside her.

Their breathing slowed and he slipped out of her.

Turning her around, he removed

the clothespin. “Are you okay?”

“You are incredible.”

“No, you are incredible.”

The bond tightened.

The ponies stirred.
