Author's Notes

"This poem is in the Old English or Anglo-Saxon style (e.g., Beowulf), with each line split into two half-lines, and the lines and half-lines connected by a rolling tide of alliterations."

Restless, ever restless, I rise at dawn,
drawing apart the dark draperies.
A copper filament, a fiery flash
caught by the summer sunrise,
suspended from the couch cushion,
lingers listlessly, lamenting a lost love.

How long has it lain, hopelessly hidden,
whispering notions that would happen no more?
The woman warned me (bewitching beauty!)
the blazing flame would someday fade and fail.
The coals grow cold, her song is silenced,
but the amber strand connects us, burning bright.
