I woke up Tuesday morning, turned on my phone and sent Ella a text that read “Good morning baby, I love you and we’ll talk later at school.”
A minute later I got a response. “I love you too and I have a surprise for you.”
I was shocked and wondered what it was. All through our short relationship, I’d been the one with the surprises, but now she had one. I was a little bit afraid of what it would be and my fears of all of this being a big practical joke came back. I slowly got ready for school and braced myself for whatever Ella might say or do today.
I got to school two minutes before the first bell and walked into the classroom. Ella walked right up to my desk, handed me a sealed envelope, winked at me and sat down at her desk. I opened the envelope and saw two remote controls. I looked at Ella who winked at me again and pointed to the envelope. I looked in the envelope again and saw a note under the remotes.
The note read “Both Lily and I are wearing vibrators and you have the controls. They are initialed ‘E’ and ‘L’ and have brand new batteries. I’ll reveal the rest of the surprise later. I love you- Ella.” I looked at Ella again, this time with a surprised expression on my face and she smiled back at me and nodded.
Lily was Ella’s best friend. Her full name was Apple Lily, but everyone just called her Lily. She was 5 foot 4 with brown hair and blue eyes. Lily was a very pretty girl, but no one could match Ella in my eyes. I hadn’t met Lily yet, but I knew about her, and I was excited to meet her and maybe even have some fun with her.
Classes went as usual, except that today I couldn’t focus on anything but Ella and Lily.
Lunchtime came and I had a huge smile on my face as I went back to my locker.
There was a note shoved inside the door that read “Homeroom, asap- E & L.” I threw my books in, slammed my locker closed and made a beeline for our homeroom. When I got there, I walked in and saw Ella and Lily. They were just sitting there talking, but they looked like goddesses and I couldn’t wait to get started. I cleared my throat and they stopped talking and looked up at me. Ella got up, walked over to me and we started kissing.
We kissed for a good few minutes and then she broke away and said, “Babe, this is Lily. Lily, this is the man we always talk about, now he’s my boyfriend.” Ella had a big smile on her face, while I was dumbfounded and it showed.
“You two have spoken about me?”
“All the time, babe, during the season we’d usually talk about your matches.

“Yes, I’ve told her everything.”
Lily was now standing at Ella’s side and chimed in “I know all about you guys and I think it’s really sweet that both of you liked the other but didn’t know that it was mutual. Then by freak accident you guys literally bumped into each other and have had a fairy tale relationship since then. Ella and I have been best friends for as long as I can remember and I want to show you my gratitude for her newfound, and constant, happiness.”
By the time Lily finished, I was grinning ear to ear and Ella’s face was as red as a tomato.
“Is this true, Ella?”
“Yes, every bit of it,” Ella blurted out, still looking very embarrassed.
“Don’t be embarrassed at all baby, I wish I had a best friend who was this caring and thoughtful.”
“Well now you do,” Lily said with a wink.
“So how will this work?” I asked.
“How do you want it to work?” Ella asked, now getting bolder and less embarrassed.
“Any way works for me as long as I can have some fun with you two,” I said.
We heard the bell signaling the end of lunch, so I kissed Ella and said “My house after school. We’ll all go together in my car and make a night of it.”
“Sounds good to me, babe,” Ella responded.
“I can’t wait,” Lily added.
Ella gave me one last kiss as we walked to our lockers and whispered to me, “Don’t forget that you still have those controls and that we are still wearing the vibrators.”
