I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but a study of over 300,000 women in China revealed that monthly breast self-exams were no more effective at finding cancer early than a yearly exam by a physician (just an exam, not by mammography or other means).

My first reaction to this is: it's a publication from the chinese government. In my view, that's worth just as much as the "evidence" provided by some "scientists" that prove the universe is only 6000 years and a bit old.
Second: I know a few people, one of them my own sister, who would now be dead, if they hadn't self examined their breasts regularly. Regardless of what the chinese government and their scientists claim, and regardless of how you feel about that, I KNOW it saves lives. I've witnessed it more than once.

Yes, I have very personal experience with BRCA, and yes, I was diagnosed Saturday past with yet another pea-size (by far the largest) mass in the 6 o'clock position in my right breast, by my physician. Still, I choose not to do BSE's. My choice, based on valid medical information. The overall lifetime risk of contracting some form of BRCA is 1 in 8, but the overall chance of contracting some form of it before the age of 40 is heart in 100.

Now, as for opinion, I firmly believe that encouraging women under the age of 40 to do BSE's is irresponsible and leads to unnecessary worry and fear, not to mention the biopsies mentioned in the study.

I didn't post this in the other thread because it's not necessary to double post, and because I feared exactly the sort of reaction it elicited from you. Sometimes the truth doesn't match the hype.

my mother had a mastectomy at age 40 because she had breast cancer. If she hadn't checked herself every month she would be dead. What if you are one of those <3% ? Of course it's your choice. you have made a decision based on the information you have decided to take onboard. All I'm saying is that it is not impossible to get these diseases within those age brackets. A pea sized lump is a considerable size. You're not concerned that you might have found it earlier with BSE? I guess I'm wondering why, with your family history, you wouldn't do everything you could to pick up a change immediately.

I'm not saying you are, but from what I'm seeing you post, I the feeling you're in denial. I will repeat, I'm not saying you are, just what it looks like to me. You've seen your mother go through it, wouldn't you want to save yourself from such a struggle?

Ermm...it was peer-reviewed (think The Lancet and the JAMA) and involved researchers from the National Institutes of Health...you know, in the United States. So...your personal experience outweighs that of nearly 300,000 women? I'd also be interested in knowing how you "know" your sister would be dead if she hadn't found her whatever. The most common form of breast cancer in women under 40 is ductal carcinoma in situ, a slow-progressing version of BRCA. The thing about breast cancer is, you can spend your life agonising over it, or you can spend your life realising that hey, cancer will never be cured in the sense that nobody ever gets it, ever again, but at the individual level? It is eminently curable. I've chosen to live my life in the latter mindset.

I'm not saying don't do the monthly BSE thing if it makes you feel better. I'm saying do the BSE monthly if you want to do it, but know that you will likely eventually find something that will lead to a painful, expensive procedure that will like prove to have been unnecessary.

I know, because that is what her oncologist told her. She was diagnosed with a very agressive type of tumor, tha t progressed from a grain of rice to something between a pea and a marble within a month. Without BSE, she would have been dead. And she is not the only one I know, for who this is true.
Even if the majority of 300000 chinese women did not benefit from BSE, even if saved just one life, it's worth learning and doing it. That one life could be yours after all.

I posted something similar on another site yesterday in a related topic...

I have had many relatives who have survived (&/or succumbed to) cancer. I am not saying that I am pro-cancer or any other disease. Know that as you read this:

1] I have stopped going to the "Relay For Life" events around here. I have my own share of incurable diseases, & I think anyone can understand if I worry more about those &/or wish to spend less of my likely-limited time raising awareness (&/or funds) for diseases that don't affect me.

2] I am (as I already wrote) not in favor of any sort of cancer, but I get especially upset when I see WWE putting male & female roster members in Breast-Cancer-Awareness-related clothes & ads, or read about the Steelers player who wanted to wear pink all season after losing his mother but wasn't allowed by the league... Yet we don't have any Lance-Armstrong-2nd-coming athlete/celebrity announcing & promoting awareness & fundraising for testicular cancer.
I am in the medical field and have cared for many cancer patients. Some are still here and some are not. I have shared good news and hugs and bad news and hugs. I have shared in the tears and have had last good-byes. Cancer does not discriminate. It crosses all boundaries.

Although Breast Cancer usually occurs in women, Breast Ca in men is on the rise so not only should women do monthly BSEs but so should men. Whether you do a BSE or not is each individual's decision but at the very least, one gets to know his/her breast tissue. Lumps, masses, sensitivities, skin texture, etc. become more evident. This is how many of the people I have worked with discovered their masses. They did a BSE and realized that an area was different, it just wasn't right. They brought that to their Doctor's attention. The cancers were caught early and treatment began without delay.

Let's remember that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and that brings to light not only Breast Ca but MANY OTHER Cancers. People and Survivors of all types of cancer are supportive. Also, any research done that gets us one step closer to a cure for ANY cancer, helps us get one step closer to a cure for ALL cancers.

Occasionally, I will look at the American Cancer Society's web site. It is loaded with information. Here is the link of the history of cancer screenings and current recommendations.

http://www.cancer.org/healthy/findcancerearly/cancerscreeningguidelines/chronological-history-of-acs-recommendations

Here is a calendar of cancers with correlation to specific months.

http://www.cancer.org/aboutus/whoweare/cancer-awareness-calendar

You can find self exams there and these two are for Breast ca and Testicular ca.

Please remember that if a BSE saves even one person's life then it is well worth it, so please don't say 2 minutes of one's time is not worth it because China did a study.

Let us not lose site of it's meaning. It is a CELEBRATION of LIFE, of LIVING, and of SURVIVORSHIP.
