England actually won!

Football's coming home! (Why do I still remember all those awful World Cup songs of the 90's? I blame my father).
Quote by Buz
I saw that most of the highly ranked teams are struggling so far. Maybe an underdog will shock the world.

That would be great. Only 8 countries have ever won it apparently.

I think the prayer worked!

Amen!

Say one for England tomorrow will you?

I think England will surprise a few this tournament. Semi-finals, here we come!

Germany is the favorite to win.

Not such a great start!
The England football team visited an orphanage in Russia yesterday.

“It’s heartbreaking to see their little faces with no hope”, said Vladimir, aged 6.

Revised spoiler: Belgium win
This was a tricky competition to judge, as we had such a creative and diverse array of entries to read through.

I am delighted to announce that MadMartigan has taken out 1st Place. Congratulations also to WannabeWordsmith and PhilU, for your excellent entries.

1st Place: - Third Class Super or Provisional Super Villain?, by MadMartigan

A new competition will be announced shortly.

Cheers,

Apologies folks, but the winners will be announced in the next 24 hours. I'm waiting on a few judges who weren't able to meet the deadline.
I love being multi algorithmic.

Sorry, what was the question?

Glad it's sorted
The award this month goes to someone who's always available to lend a hand, and help those who seek extra guidance.

He often goes above and beyond for our aspiring writers, and packs an almighty punch with his own stories too.

For processing over 100 stories in May (thank you too, to CurvyGalore, JWren and Sweet as Candy for your major contributions), the award goes to ChrisM.

Thank you for all your hard work and time Chris!

I'll be in touch regarding your $100 award
Good luck on getting it done RR!

Re the double space issue, couldn't you simply copy the story, put it into a flat file format, then do a find / replace on the spaces?

I'll ask Gav about this, as there may be a way to go through the entire story database, and do the same with the find / replace trick. May be super complicated to program, I have no idea.

Thanks for the bump also!
Belated Happy Birthday. I hope you were spoiled rotten and had a wonderful time.

Although we have a set of "Style" rules concerning authors' notes (preferred at the end, for the reasons states above), of course there should be some degree of flexibility.

We are in the process of working out the best way to move forward, with this in mind. Ongoing discussions have been underway for a few weeks now.

The most likely option will be that an author may place their notes at either the beginning or end of a story, but those notes will not be visible in the excerpts shown on the front page.

I think that's the best option going forward.

I'll take a look at your particular story tomorrow and be in touch.

I know I am still new here and by far not one of the best writers on here. But when it comes to competitions, I would hope that there is more than votes and views that go into choosing the winner. I just entered my first one and have done ok on votes and my views are comparable to the others, but I am not in the lead so to speak. I think this would be a terrible way to choose a winner. I was able to get my story in very early which will equate to more views and votes than someone that pushes it till the end. This would not be fair to them if their story is better than mine. I have personally read all of the stories that are entered and voted on each one. No I did not vote a 5 on each one. I voted according to what I felt it was worth to me as a reader. I feel that every entrant should in the name of fair play, should read every story and give an honest vote. So again this would not be fair to those are unable to get their work in till late. I hope that the mods that are deciding this also do it in a blind voting. Meaning, Gav has a mod voting system setup that collects that votes and compiles them without anyone else ever knowing who voted what on which story. I would hope their voting is also a lot more comprehensive, such as for context, length, quality of writing, readability, and so on. Anyway, I just hope that everyone does well in any competition they choose to enter.

I thought I'd posted a sticky about the process, but perhaps it's because I've mentioned it in so many threads over the years, that I thought I had already! I'll post a revised version of this and make it a sticky next week:

The competition judging process:

- Our judges are asked to read as many competition stories as they can, over the duration of the competition. We ask them to do this, in case some gems slip through, which should be given due consideration.

- Typically the top 20 - 30 stories (depending on the # entries and story lengths) based on highest average score, are then read. I try to read all the entries if I have the time.

- That list is whittled down to a Top 10, which are then sent to a panel of judges.

- The panel is made up of a team of at least half a dozen judges, including moderators, "standard" members, and myself.

- The total # points from each judge, for each story, are added together. The stories with the highest point scores, win.

I believe this is the fairest way to do it. It takes several days for me to remove scores from competitors, to read through the stories, score them, write notes and draw up a shortlist. Judges are asked to mention any they feel should be included in the Top 10.

I have been on many other story sites. The worst of which, basically allocate the top prizes, to those stories receiving the highest average scores. That leaves their competitions open to manipulation, as friend spamming is rife. Someone with 500 "friends", can win with a sub-standard story.
The award for Moderator of the Month for April goes to someone who has not bean listed before, but has ground out a place this time around. Last month, she made a mochary of the story queue. She particularly likes stories involving a Mélange a trois, and guys with big plungers.

She espressos herself with utmost finesse, and always manages to find time and a kind word for those in need.

A huge thanks to browncoffee, for her tireless work and dedication to our collective cause. A fantastic writer (check out her stories if you haven't already!), and all round lovely person.

I'll be in touch re your $100 prize

(sorry about the terrible puns )
Suspended for 3 days.

I've told her this is not the place to air her issues.
I love how companies like Facebook, and Google, are now starting to have to show some accountability.

It's disgusting what they get away with.
What's your favourite type of cheese?

I've moved this to the "LushSpace" introductory forum, which is a better fit for the post.

Welcome to the site!

Stop it. You are fueling my fantasies of you as Ms. Norbury from Mean Girls.

Not far off ... I'm a pusher!

Talking of which, get cracking with this competition. Make time! It has you written all over it.

My waking state is confusion. Every so often I get it together long enough to string a few words together to form a sentence.

A suggestion: A FLASH ONLY COMPETITION!!!

We've run one (maybe more) of these in the past. https://www.lushstories.com/competitions/quickie-sex.aspx for example. We had some super hot entries.

I really like the shorter format competitions, as a) They give authors a real challenge, b) Less words for my ageing eyes to read

We're due one fairly soon I'd say.
Quote by Verbal
Cool theme.

I asked this before the Changes competition, but forgot the answer. Is there a minimum for these? Can I submit a flash?

If there are minimum or maximum word limits, I mention them on the competition page.

For this one:

"As an added challenge, stories should be no longer than 6,000 words."

So a flash piece would be fine It would probably have to be an incredible piece of writing (quite within your abilities!), if it were to beat a well written story which was towards the upper word count limits. Just a thought to bear in mind.

Perhaps I should make it clearer, or specify the upper and lower word limits in the competition copy in future?
Several of our overworked and unpaid Moderators, put in a huge effort in March on the story front, including Sweet as Candy, JWren and Curvygalore, who tackled over half the queue on their own. A huge thank you to you guys in particular

This month's prize cabinet gets unlocked by someone who has been a stalwart on the modding team for a long time. She doesn't become unhinged by difficult decisions, and her door is always open to authors' questions.

Ok, enough with the bad hints already. Please give it up for the wonderful KEE.

And if you haven't yet read her work, I strongly suggest you add her stories to your reading list.

Thank you for all your hard work as always Kee. Please check your inbox shortly, with details of your $100 prize.
It's story competition time again, and this one has a very playful nature to it.

Masked Competition

The word "mask" appeared in English in the 1530s, from Middle French masque "covering to hide or guard the face", derived in turn from Italian maschera, from Medieval Latin masca "mask, specter, nightmare".

Masks. We all wear them. The work face. The face you put on when visiting family. The out in public face. But what about putting on a different mask to accentuate who you really are or want to be?

Competition Theme

Join the masquerade ball and put on a different mask. Be a super hero or a mysterious stranger. A kitten or a clown. Maybe you're already wearing one - everyone thinks you're a good girl, but at night, when the mask comes off, the real you comes out?

With the likes of ritual masks, medical fetish masks, gas masks, theatrical masks, steampunk gear, bdsm masks, carnival masks, animal fetish role play masks or any other masked disguise at your disposal, the possibilities are far reaching.

A mask, either physical or metaphorical, must feature in competition stories. Put them on or take them off!

As an added challenge, stories should be no longer than 6,000 words.

Prizes:

Winner: $150
Second Place: $100
Third Place: $50

Thank you!

I'm disgusted by the amount of plastic we use, and have been campaigning with the green party for years. If I can do more with people here, that would be great.
