Announcing our Anti Valentine Competition

Roses are red, violets are blu...uuuergh. Ah, stick it. We don’t want your sweet sonnets and heart-shaped eyes. We don’t want happily-ever-afters and butterflies and sunshine.

Welcome to Anti Valentine, where the only bunnies are the ones in pots. We want tales of the woefully unexpected. Did a romantic weekend turn into a haunted horror show? Did a surprise proposal uncover a cheating scandal between your non-betrothed and your best mate? Did a romantic walk in the woods leave you fleeing from a murderous axe-person?

We’re looking for sexy stories with a dark twist, be it horror, intrigue, scandal or adrenaline-spiking action. This competition will run through the month of February and to challenge you even more, we’re keeping the word count to a measly 2,500 maximum.

Yes absolutely. There is no restriction on genre here, although we wouldn't accept poetry or microfiction.

If you're using a well known character, just make sure that it's something which is in the public domain and not copyright, otherwise, having generic monsters (like using vampire rather than Dracula etc) is safer.

Hate to get nerdy about Dracula. I already did a story on the real reason why Vlad III was called The Impaler (who doesn't like a good plug? Dracula - An Origin Story), even though it's a flash, I am ever the geek and love my research.

A couple of things I found out:

Bram Stoker died in 1912 (I had to recheck, but knew it was over 100 years ago), currently in both US and UK copyright expires 70 years after an author's death).

Even if I used Dracula in a work a few years after the book was published, I'm not sure that Stoker could have touched me as Vlad III was also known a Vlad Dracula. Dracula meaning son of Dracul; Vlad II was also known as Vlad Dracul or Vlad the devil. So the impaler was also the son of the devil.

Broadly speaking, does horror/comedy fit the theme? I've got something that starts off a bit horror/bloody before devolving into comedic weirdness, that I think fits the theme but I'm not sure about.

I would hope so. Sounds like something that should be there.

I might sit this one out. There's another comp I am more interested in and I did just win, albeit in an unofficial one.

Terrific theme, though, so I hope to see some good stories come out of it.

I love horror erotica. Honestly the toughest task here is the 2500 word count. I’ve been brainstorming and abandoning most my ideas so far. Not enough space for many scenes, probably going to have to focus on one.

Fun comp though, if I have enough time I want to play! I do feel like the 10k word structure of the last competition may have weighted a few judges down, which is understandable.

I'm still in awe with that snowflake.

I've been hit with an idea for this one, which is absolutely ridiculous, but hopefully I can pull off with how comical its meant to be. A 2500 word count will definitely be tricky.

We had a go and writing it was a lot of fun. A story of 2,500 words is tricky but not impossible, and may the best story win! 😘
